Readiness before movement
Preparation starts with information. Artwork identifiers, condition notes, dimensions, access requirements and installation order are reviewed before an item enters the working area.
Handling plans are matched to the format and known sensitivities of each work. Fragile, unusually shaped or high-value items require responsible personnel and procedures appropriate to the artwork, site and insurer or lender instructions.
Preparation scope
- Review pre-installation condition information and identifiers.
- Confirm the handling route, staging point and installation area.
- Separate clean preparation zones from active installation zones.
- Coordinate protective materials and access requirements.
- Record packaging removal and re-use considerations.
- Confirm readiness with the responsible exhibition contact.
Surface and environment awareness
Walls, floors, plinths and adjacent surfaces are checked for dust, moisture concerns, recent works or obstacles that could affect preparation. Environmental conditions may also influence timing and handling decisions. Where a condition is uncertain, the work is paused for specialist review.
Packaging is not removed automatically. Its sequence, storage and return requirements are confirmed in advance. Protective materials are kept controlled so that clean surfaces remain clean and the installation route remains clear.
Documentation and coordination
Short records reduce ambiguity. Notes can cover arrival condition, staging location, exceptions, agreed sequence and outstanding actions. They are useful when multiple teams share a room or when installation takes place across several days.
Good for
Pre-installation surveys, gallery preparation days, temporary displays, staged changeovers and teams requiring a clear readiness process.
What to know
This is planning and coordination support, not a substitute for conservation advice, structural assessment or specialist art transport. Unsafe or uncertain handling should be referred to an appropriately qualified professional before movement.
